I came across the LedgerSMB website a couple of weeks ago, but didn't try it out because it is a recent fork and still looks very similar to SQL-Ledger. Nonetheless, the direction and activity level look promising so I will take a look when a new version is released. Good luck with the development.

My business used to support SQL-Ledger. Unfortunately, it became clear that DWS viewed us as a competitor and didn't want us in the community. We joined the LedgerSMB project. It was often too much to both fight with the maintainer we discovered that our customers were paying a price.

The LedgerSMB project is multi-vendor (so you don't have to rely on one company), and the database is in far better shape already (and is undergoing further redesign). Ron (and others), I would recommend Command Prompt as a proven, reliable development company should you decide to migrate.

From the accounting criteria in this article, it does not fair much better yet, but we are working on fully re-designing the system and all input is welcome. One of the key design requirements is that the application should always do the right thing accounting-wise regardless of how this is automated in the workflow. We expect fundamental improvements to become more evident in the coming year.

You should look at LedgerSMB. It is a fork of SQL Ledger and has already surpassed it in data integrity, security and configuration.

We also have a vibrant and active *real* community.

Hi Ron,

Your point is revealing. A supposed benefit of open source software is precisely that the source code code is open - it's possible to modify and improve the software according to your needs. Of course this is only a benefit if you have or can find the necessary skilled resources, so for the vast majority of smaller businesses and consumers the benefit is illusory.

Do you still use SQL-Ledger? Do my review conclusions seem fair, or is the software in practice better or worse than I found?
