New to the world of blogs? Don’t know how to keep up to date with a blog? Are you unsure even what a blog is? If so then this is the page for you.
What is a blog?
- It’s a type of website
- It contains a series of entries, or posts, that are written sequentially over time (like a diary or log)
- It is usually possible for anyone reading a blog entry to respond by typing in a “comment”, which is subsequently displayed at the end of the entry. Using this mechanism, blog authors and blog readers can converse “online”, anonymously if desired
- Blogs often list hyperlinks to other blogs or websites that the blog author recommends
- From a blog author’s point of view, a blog is a type of website that can be updated and managed very easily
For more interesting and extensive definitions, see the blog subject in Wikipedia or the New Media survey from my favourite “old media” publication, the Economist.
How do I read a blog?
Reading and responding to blogs is easy and entirely voluntary.
If you want to read one or two blogs, simply add them to your browser favourites or bookmarks, then check them every so often to find out what’s new.
If you find more blogs that you want to follow, you’ll find it easiest to use a “feed reader” or “aggregator” - software that gathers together into one place the new entries on all of the blogs that you want to read. Using an aggregator means you don’t have to visit lots of different blog websites.
There are lots of feed readers to choose from. To name a few, Bloglines, Google Reader, Rojo are web-based ones, Feedreader and FeedDemon are applications for your own PC
