Nice review! I think the holy grail in FREE accounting packages lies in a program like SQL-Ledger and it's forked offshot LedgerSMB, webERP, etc.
I'm a big fan of intranets (internal webs) and the fact that you can put your app on a reliable machine, lock it up and do accounting from your web browser is very appealing on a lot of levels.

And your precious data is stored in either super-reliable PostgreSQL or MySQL running on super-stable Linux (or Windows if ya want). This, to me, is fantabulous.
So I say to everyone here, take a peek at web-based accounting software that you install on your PC (not running off someone's server) which is running via Apache web server & a rock solid relational database (RDBMS).

I will echo the thanks above for taking the time to review this software, which has saved me some time.

EasyAs Accounting Software is one I have looked at - simply put, it is horrible.

I am keeping an open mind about Adminsoft Accounting Suite, but my initial thoughts are that it is not very flexible.

My Quickbooks v8 file has errors which can't be repaired and it has caused me to look around. I don't want to get into the upgrade cycle that Quickbooks and MYOB try to enforce. Quickbooks v8 is very effective, flexible and easy to use. I have tried the demos for later versions and fail to find a difference (10 years later!) that would make it imperative to upgrade (apart from the tax tables).

Great review. Stumbled on this trying to find some OSS accounting software that didn't suck. Looks TurboCash isn't it.

I like it Jim! Shortcuts is a great idea for someone in your business. Even if the user does not use the shortcuts over and over, I bet they will find something that will stick with them and think of you as the supplier.

Thanks for the mention.

I agree with all of you. Turbo is the worst accounting package on the market. Learning how to use it takes ages and the graphics are aweful. Nevertherless, it's free and is no doubt attractive to new and small companies.

However, investing in a good computerised accounting is a good investment and will provide tangible ROI. I would stay clear of Turbocash if I was you and would use Sage, Quickbooks or Peachtree instead.

Isn't this what systems accountants do? You and I and Stephane-Robert obviously work as S/A's, straddling the "accounting-IT divide".

In my experience plenty of accountants acquire adequate relevant system skills, but fewer IT people acquire adequate relevant accounting skills.

And I'm not saying that accountants some SQL knowledge = IT professional.

Thank you for this review. I have spent hours on Turbo Cash trying to figure it out. I couldn't believe how hard it was just to get a payment received into books and I'm still not sure where the money went. I have been trying to get away from the Quickbooks treadmill because I am an extremely small business and don't feel that I need to upgrade just because Quickbooks decides to disable emailing of invoices for 2004 edition. Turbo Cash has caused me to question my intelligence, seeing this review has restored my confidence. Thanks.
